The European Equipment Rental Industry 2008 Report Released

The European Rental Association (ERA) announces the publication of The European Equipment Rental Industry 2008 Report with the most comprehensive data available to date on the European rental industry.
“The ERA set out to answer the simple question, “How big is the rental market in Europe?” and today we know. This achievement gives us a new vision of our industry and demonstrates ERA’s unique value to the rental industry both in Europe as well as globally.” said Michel Petitjean, ERA’s Secretary General.
This groundbreaking report has been produced by ERA in cooperation with IHS Global Insight. The European Equipment Rental Industry 2008 Report is the first report on the equipment rental industry at a European level. It contains a country-by-country analysis over 11 European countries, and includes market size information and key ratios among which four types of penetration rates. The report also contains forecasts for 2009 per country.
“Thanks to the combination of the study on 11 countries with the previous ERA estimates on the remaining countries, we can now state that the European equipment rental industry represents a total turnover of €33.6 billion in 2008, including rental with operators, and €24.4 billion excluding rental with operators.” said Michel Petitjean.
Highlights of some of the key findings in the report include:

In 2008, the total size of the European equipment rental market was
€33.6 billion. The 11 countries covered in the study represent €31.8 billion in 2008 -
Of the €33.6 billion turnover, €24.4 billion are without operators and €9.2 billion are with operators.

The total turnover decreased 2.8% from 2007 to 2008 as an average in Europe and is expected to decrease between 0% and -11% from country to country in 2009.

In 2006, there were 36,400 companies active in rental, of which less than 15,000 were rental companies without operators.

Companies active in rental have been identified in three classes, rental companies as a primary business without operators (NACE code 71.32), rental companies as a primary business with operators (NACE code 45.50) and other companies providing rental services.

Rental companies without operators represent some 22,400 rental depots.

The equipment rental industry employed in 2006 more than 177,500
persons, including 117,700 in rental without operators and 59,800 in
rental with operators. -
Average fleet age in 2008 was 3.8 years, ranging from 2.9 years for the lowest country to 5.7 years for the highest.
The 2008 Report contains over 60 pages of statistical information: Detailed results per country; four types of penetration (against Equipment Sales, Equipment Population, Construction Industry, and Country Population); market forecasts for 2009, average fleet age per country, and top 5 revenue-generating products.
